Nico Sawatzki

Video and music: Benjamin Hoffmeister

The artist, who was born in Regensburg in 1984, has roots in urban art. In the mid-1990s, Nico Sawatzki began to discover the spray can for himself and has remained loyal to this medium to this day. Over time, interest in classical painting developed and he began to experiment with his style.

This willingness to experiment is reflected in his works today. Its multi-layered structure with simultaneous deconstruction of layers of color creates difficult, imaginary spatial constructions that create an enormous effect of depth through compression and dissolution on different picture levels.

With breaks in perspective, exaggerated colourfulness and consciously disturbing staged shadows or light sources, he repeatedly leads the viewer astray. The artist creates areas of tension that are calmed down again in the next moment by clear surfaces and shapes. Nico Sawatzki made renowned art institutions aware of his work very early on.

Public purchases, such as those of the “Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen”, the “Thomas JC and Angelika Matzen Foundation”, the “Collection Oberpfalz District ” as well as purchases for numerous private collections in Germany and abroad confirm his career to date.
